Zhang Weili says Rose Namajunas “needs to win” one more fight before challenging her for the UFC strawweight title

Zhang Weili is down for a trilogy fight against Rose Namajunas, however, she doesn’t think it should be the next fight.

Zhang Weili is a two-time UFC strawweight champion.

Zhang Weili defeated Carla Esparza by way of a second-round submission at last month’s UFC 281 event to become a two-time strawweight champion. Following the win, talk has turned to who’s next to challenge for the belt.

During a recent appearance on The MMA Hour, Weili was asked if she’d be down to put her title on the line against Rose Namajunas. Weili said she is sure the fight will someday happen, but she doesn’t think it should be next.

Maybe not immediately, the next title defense, but we’ll run into each other down the road,” Weili said.

Zhang went on to say that she believes Namajunas needs to win one more fight before challenging for the belt.

Yes, she needs to win one to get her confidence back,” she said.

Namajunas and Weili have fought twice before. In the first meeting, Namajunas knocked out Zhang Weili in the first-round to capture the UFC strawweight title from her. In the second meeting, Namajunas would edge out a razor close split decision.

Since that time, Namajunas lost the UFC strawweight title to Carla Esparza by way of a split decision. Meanwhile, Weili knocked out Joanna Jedrzejczyk en route to her submission win over Esparza to re-capture the title.

Fight fans, what do you think? Does Namajunas need one more win before challenging Zhang Weili for the UFC strawweight championship? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

  1. Maybe they can do Rose vs Esparza 3 first. Doesn’t sound like a fan friendly fight, but it could be if Rose decides to fight this time. And if she wins she can have another go at Weili.
