2020 was an exciting year in the world of Women’s MMA and 2021 looks set to be just as exhilarating for fight fans.
Here’s a brief rundown on every female UFC fight booked for January 2021 so far:
UFC Fight Night: Holloway vs. Kattar (January 16, 2021)
Bantamweight Bout: Bethe Correia vs. Wu Yanan
Bethe Correia (11-5-1) takes to the octagon for her “last dance” after announcing plans to retire last year. The 37-year-old, who previously challenged Ronda Rousey for the UFC bantamweight title, will be matched up against China’s Wu Yanan (11-3). Correia is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Pannie Kianzad, whilst Yanan is coming off a split decision loss to Mizuki Inoue.
UFC Fight Night: Edwards vs Chimaev (January 20, 2021)
Flyweight Bout: Roxanne Modafferi vs. Viviane Araujo
Modafferi (25-17-0) went 2-1 last year after picking up wins over Maycee Barber and Andrea Lee, but dropping a decision to Lauren Murphy. Also known as ‘The Happy Warrior’, Modafferi looks to get 2021 off to a good start by taking out talented Brazilian striker, Viviane Araujo (9-2-0). Araujo fought once in 2020, picking up a unanimous decision win over Montana De La Rosa.
Flyweight Bout: Victoria Leonardo vs. Manon Fiorot
Leonardo (8-2-0) makes her first appearance for the UFC after earning herself a contract thanks to a round-two TKO win over Chelsea Hackett on an episode of Dana White’s Contender Series this past November. Her opponent will be a promotional newcomer in her own right, the reigning UAE Warriors Flyweight Champion – Manon Fiorot (5-1-0).
UFC 257: Poirier vs. McGregor 2 (January 23, 2021)
Flyweight Bout: Jessica Eye vs. Joanne Calderwood
Eye (15-8-0), a former UFC flyweight title challenger, looks to get 2021 off to a good start after losing a unanimous decision to Cynthia Calvillo this past June. The 34-year-old will be taking on Scotland’s Joanne Calderwood (14-5-0), who is coming off a first-round armbar submission loss to Jennifer Maia.
Bantamweight Bout: Julianna Pena vs. Sara McMann
Former TUF winner Julianna Pena (9-4-0) looks to rebound from a submission loss to Germaine de Randamie when she battles Olympic wrestler Sara McMann (12-5-0). McMann made a successful return to competition in 2020 following a hiatus due to pregnancy, the 40-year-old picked up a dominant unanimous decision win over Lina Lansberg.
Strawweight Bout: Marina Rodriguez vs. Amanda Ribas
A battle between highly-touted Brazilian prospects takes place when Marina Rodriguez (12-1-2) takes on Amanda Ribas (10-1-0). Rodriguez has picked up wins over the likes of Tecia Torres and Jessica Aguilar since signing with the UFC, but lost a split decision to Carla Esparza this past July. Meanwhile, Ribas is coming off a first-round submission victory over Paige VanZant and owns additional promotional wins over Mackenzie Dern, Randa Markos and Emily Whitmire.
