Jennifer Maia returns to the cage at this Saturday’s UFC Vegas 46 event when she takes on Katlyn Chookagian.
The fight will be a rematch from a 2019 encounter in which Chookagian was victorious via unanimous decision. Since that time, Maia has been clearing out the rest of the competition, aside from a decision defeat to Valentina Shevchenko. Although Maia lost to Shevchenko, it should be noted she gave the champion her toughest test to date, going all five rounds and even winning one of them.
During a recent chat with Combate, Maia expressed her belief that she’s the only one who has a chance at beating Shevchenko. She hopes a victory over Chookagian on Saturday will take her to a second title shot.
“I believe that, if I win this one, I could be even more prepared to face Valentina again. I made her struggle a little bit, I gave her a bit of a hard time. At the moment, if anyone can beat her, I believe it’s me. For now, I was the one who gave her the hardest five rounds. So, at the moment, I believe I’m the opponent who can beat the so called ‘unbeatable’ one. My goal is to bring one more belt to Brazil this year.” she said.
Chookagian is considered the best UFC flyweight in the world, other than Valentina Shevchenko and Jessica Andrade. Maia will be looking to take that spot by avenging the loss to Chookagian and making her case for another shot at UFC gold.
UFC Vegas 46 takes place this Saturday January 15, 2022, from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. The main card, featuring Chookagian vs. Maia II, will be aired live on ESPN & ESPN+ from 7pm ET.
