UFC champ-champ Amanda Nunes vows to defend the featherweight title again

2 min read

Amanda Nunes, the current UFC women’s bantamweight and featherweight champion, has expressed her desire to defend her featherweight belt soon. However, it’s important to note that the UFC ultimately decides who Nunes fights next, and not the fighter herself. Despite this, Nunes has faced criticism from fans for not defending her featherweight title in over two years.

Since then, Nunes lost her bantamweight title to Julianna Pena in a surprising upset but regained it in dominant fashion. She is set to put her bantamweight title on the line again in the UFC 289 main event against Irene Aldana on June 10.

Despite her recent success, some fans have criticized Nunes for promoting herself as a double champ without defending her featherweight title. However, her recent statements indicate that she intends to change that soon.

Definitely. I take everything step by step. My next opponent is obviously right here next to me, so I’ve got to be focused on her and everything, but definitely (I will defend the featherweight title). I’m a double champion for a reason, baby. I’m going to keep defending these two belts (until) my body tells me to stop. I feel healthy, I feel good, I feel happy.” Nunes said at a recent UFC 289 press conference.

Whatever the UFC wants to do. I feel like we might have a 145-pound opponent soon, and let’s see how it’s going to play out. Whatever happens, the UFC decides. It’s not my final decision, but I’m going to be there. Whoever is going to step in front of me, I’m going to be there. Whatever, who else, I’m going to be defending my belt.” she added.

This news should come as a relief to fans who have been waiting for Nunes to defend her featherweight title again. While her dominance in the bantamweight division has been impressive, her inactivity in the featherweight division has left some fans feeling unfulfilled.

There is also speculation about who Nunes’ next opponent will be in the featherweight division. A potential title eliminator will take place on July 15 when Norma Dumont takes on Chelsea Chandler. If either woman picks up an impressive win, she could be the next challenger for Nunes’ featherweight title.

Of course, should Nunes get through her upcoming bantamweight title defense against Irene Aldana on June 10, it will be exciting to see who she faces next in her quest to defend her featherweight belt. Her impressive list of victories over some of the greatest names in WMMA history has earned her the status of being one of the sport’s all-time greats, and her continued dominance in both the bantamweight and featherweight divisions has cemented her legacy.

Fans can rest assured that Nunes is not content to rest on her laurels and is always looking for new challenges to further prove herself as one of the best fighters in UFC history.
