UFC 280 Predictions: WMMA Rankings Staff Picks

Read Time:4 Minute, 31 Second

UFC 280 takes place on Saturday October 22, 2022, from the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

A pivotal flyweight contest will feature on the pay-per-view main card when Katlyn Chookagian (18-4-0) takes on Manon Fiorot (9-1-0).

Bantamweights will make an appearance on the preliminary card when Karol Rosa (15-4-0) battles Lina Lansberg (10-6-0).

Ahead of Saturday’s big event, four members of the WMMA Rankings Staff Team have made their predictions and analysis for both fights. Take a look below.

Katlyn Chookagian vs. Manon Fiorot

Tonya: Katlyn Chookagian has been around the block a time or two.  Fighting the likes of Valentina Shevchenko and Jessica Andrade, one may even consider her a gatekeeper of the division.  However, the Blonde Fighter’s usual style of keeping her opponent on the outside with the jab will be ineffective against Fiorot’s power and ability to land a clinch takedown.  Anticipate a productive and competitive first round, with Fiorot wearing Chookagian down in the second round and ultimately getting the KO.
Winner: Manon Fiorot

Bolu: What a fight! We have the great defender of the Flyweight division, Katlyn Chookagian vs the next big star, Manon Fiorot. Chookagian’s game is pretty recognizable by now. She simply finds a way to outscore her opponent. By either using her excellent jab with her expert judgment of range or an unexpected takedown or two, she’ll pick at an opponent for 15 minutes to grab a decision win. Fiorot poses a massive threat, however. She’s a brilliant striker who uses her sidekick expertly to judge distance at the start of the fight. She’s brilliant at going in and out of the fire and avoiding damage. She has brilliant takedown defense and has shown she’s willing to go to the ground with anyone. I think range will be the most important thing about this fight. Both women are used to fighting smaller opposition and I wonder how each will fair facing off someone similar to them in size and somatotype. Another close fight, I like the talent of Manon Fiorot but I can never bet against Chookagian. She just always seems to find a way to win.
Winner: Katlyn Chookagian

Brittany: While Chookagian’s experience could be her biggest advantage here, I feel like Fiorot’s striking will be too much for her in this bout. We’ve seen Chookagian finished before and I think Fiorot has the striking capability to do it again.
Winner: Manon Fiorot

Denycia: Manon Fiorot is one of the most exciting fighters in the flyweight division. Her fights are fun and she always tries to put her opponents lights out. And I predict she will do that to Katlyn Chookagian this Saturday night. That being said, Chookagian will not make it easy. The “Blonde Fighter” has fought the best the division has to offer and has defeated most. I see this being a fun fight—both ladies putting it all on the line. But in the end, Fiorot will be too much for Chookagian.
Winner: Manon Fiorot

Karol Rosa vs. Lina Lansberg

Tonya: This fight has banger potential with two Muay Thai specialists going head-to-head.  Karol Rosa benefits from a two-inch reach advantage and has youth on her side, as her opponent Lina Lansberg, is a 40-year-old veteran in the game.  That being said, we all know that anyone can get caught on any night, so don’t sleep on the Elbow Queen.  Look for a violent standup bout going to the judges with Karol Rosa pulling off the win.
Winner: Karol Rosa

Bolu: The first of two women’s fights for UFC 280. Karol Rosa looks to get back into the win column after her decision loss to Sara McMann and the veteran Lina Lansberg is looking to break her two-fight loss streaking dating back to January 2020. I think both women will be even in the standup. Rosa tends to plant her feet which means leg kicks will be a possibility for Lansberg to score. Despite this, after her loss against Sara McMann, Rosa took some time to compete in grappling to improve her submission offence, so the Swede must be careful if she’s throwing those kicks. We’ve consistently seen Lansberg’s great clinch work and takedown defense, so it’ll be a closely fought contest. I’m confident this will make it to a judge’s decision but this fight is a flip of a coin for me. I’ll take the youth of Rosa to sneak a split decision.
Winner: Karol Rosa

Brittany: I think Rosa has several advantages going into this fight. She’s younger, quicker, and has potentially fought tougher opposition than Lansberg. I can see her keeping Lina at a distance and picking her apart for the decision win.
Winner: Karol Rosa

Denycia: I don’t see Lina Lansberg giving Karol Rosa much of a problem in this fight. Rosa is the better striker and has a higher percentage for takedown accuracy and defense. The Brazilian also has the longer reach, which I believe will cause Lansberg to make a few forward-stepping mistakes, considering she is the taller fighter. I predict Rosa will win the fight with a decision victory.
Winner: Karol Rosa

The UFC 280 main card will be aired live on pay-per-view from 2pm ET. The preliminary card will air on ESPN+ from 10:30am ET.
