Tracy Cortez believes Taila Santos was the true winner of her recent clash against Valentina Shevchenko.

Tracy Cortez believes Taila Santos should have been declared the winner against Shevchenko.

Taila Santos challenged Valentina Shevchenko for the flyweight championship at UFC 275 this past June, losing by way of a split decision. The Brazilian was certainly Shevchenko’s toughest challenge at flyweight to date. Fans on social media have been divided when it comes to who they think truly won the controversial bout.

During a recent chat with MMA Junkie, the number-thirteen ranked UFC flyweight contender Tracy Cortez expressed her thoughts on the situation. She says that Taila Santos was the rightful winner of the fight and “exposed a lot of Valentina’s weaknesses”.

I think the rematch vs. Santos. I think that would be very well deserved. I would have gave it to Santos. I think Santos dominated. I think she had Valentina fighting defensively for the most part and Santos really put the pressure and showed that she wanted to be the champion. I think she also exposed a lot of Valentina’s weaknesses, so that’s always exciting.” she said.

Valentina Shevchenko is widely considered one of the greatest UFC champions in the organization’s history. The ‘Bullet’ has defended the title a total of seven times since capturing the vacant belt by defeating Joanna Jedrzejczyk back in December 2018.

Cortez has been rising the ranks and hopes to one day earn her shot at the UFC flyweight championship. Th 28-year-old has gone 4-0 since signing with the UFC and looks to pick up her fifth win when she battles Amanda Ribas at the UFC Fight Night Orlando event on December 3.
