Speculation is high as to whether Rose Namajunas could be moving to the flyweight division following comments from Manon Fiorot last week.
Manon Fiorot, who is currently the number one ranked flyweight contender, recently told the press that she needs one more fight before challenging Valentina Shevchenko for the flyweight title. She expressed interest in welcoming Namajunas to flyweight for her next fight.
During an interview with MMA Fighting this past August, Namajunas seemed uncertain about her next moves but did drop some hints.
“The thing I do know for a fact — and I don’t know when exactly I might fight again — but I do know that I want to do a grappling match of some sort. I want to really rack up some experience in that department. Also, once I get my other things in order, my life stuff, I’ll be lifting lots of weights, and maybe put on a little more muscle, and just kind of see what happens from there.” she said.
When asked directly if her plans to put on muscle meant a move up to flyweight, Namajunas hinted so.
“I don’t know, you can do the math. I really don’t know, like I said, just one step at a time. The UFC has given me some offers for things and I just need the time to just not think about fighting at all, and then in the fall I’ll kind of lay out everything to see what makes sense.” she explained.
Since this interview, the grappling match Namajunas spoke about has come to fruition. She’ll be taking on UFC’s submission record holder Gillian Robertson at the FURY Pro Grappling 6 event on December 30. As for a move up to the flyweight division, that could very well be a possibility for 2023.
