REPORT: Joanne Calderwood to challenge Valentina Shevchenko for flyweight title at UFC 251

First reported by Brett Okamoto of ESPN, Valentina Shevchenko is set to defend the flyweight title against Joanne Calderwood at UFC 251 on June 6.

Flyweight queen Valentina Shevchenko (19-3) last defended the belt at UFC 247, stopping Katlyn Chookagian in the third round. Since claiming the title at UFC 231, “Bullet” has defended the belt three times against the likes of Jessica Eye, Liz Carmouche and the aforementioned Katlyn Chookagian.

Joanne Calderwood (14-4) got back in the win column at UFC 242 by defeating Andrea Lee via split-decision. Since her move to the 125-pound division, “JoJo” is 3-1 in her last four.

    1. i can’t wait for this fight! why does it have to be so far away??? 4 months someone might get hurt god forbid. just do it in 6 weeks. pleeeez

  1. IMO, Katlyn had the best chance of putting up a competitive fight against Queen Valentina and we saw how that turned out! Outside of her i don’t see many others in the flyweight currently in the division.

I think the biggest challenge JoJo will face is going to be the speed differential.

  2. not an interesting fight. Calderwood has more esteem than deserved as far as her prospects. she’s past it, over the hill. a career of being undisciplined and a huge weight cutter, she gasses in nearly every one of her fights. she’s also quite slow, tbh this might be almost as quick as the Jessica Eye/Shevchenko fight.

it’s been said a bunch, but it’s sadly true. Valentina is fighting in a division of cans and has beens. after she beat Jedrzejczyk she has nothing but a buffet of light snacks in front of her.
