Invicta FC champ Alesha Zappitella explains why she’ll be moving up to strawweight after next week’s title defense

Alesha Zappitella returns to the cage on January 12 when she attempts to defend her Invicta FC atomweight championship against top contender Jessica Delboni.

Zappitella (9-2-0, 1 NC) recently revealed that next week’s fight will be her last at atomweight as she plans to move up to the 115-pound strawweight division. On Wednesday, after news broke that UFC’s broadcasters ESPN are predicting the organization will add an atomweight division in 2022, Zappitella confirmed she is still not interested in sticking around at 105-pounds and explained exactly why.

No one can pay me enough to cut to 105 again. I care about my health more than my job. For 3 fights now I have been asking to move up. I’m putting my foot down. I will fight better healthy and strong.” she said.

Zappitella (9-2-0) is currently riding high on an impressive four fight win streak. The ‘Half Pint’ submitted Ashley Cummins back in September 2020 to capture the Invicta FC atomweight championship, successfully making her first defense of the title via decision against Jessica Delboni last year. She now looks to once again defeat Delboni before making her move up to the strawweight division.

‘Invicta FC 45: Zappitella vs. Delboni 2’ takes place on January 12, 2022, from the PAL KC in Kansas City, Kansas, United States. The event will be streamed live on YouTube via MMA Junkie and Invicta FC themselves.
