Invicta atomweight champ Alesha Zappitella set for UFC run? Plans move up to strawweight after this month’s fight

Invicta FC’s Alesha Zappitella returns to the cage on January 12 when she attempts to defend her atomweight championship against Jessica Delboni.

Alesha Zappitella set for move up to 115-pound strawweight division after upcoming fight.

Zappitella (9-2-0) captured the Invicta FC atomweight championship in September 2020 after defeating Ashley Cummins via submission. She would defend her title against Jessica Delboni in May of this year by way of a split decision. The pair will now rematch, with Zappitella looking to pick up a dominant win, and then moving up to strawweight.

On Friday, fans asked Zappitella on Twitter about her thoughts on the shocking New Years Eve upset in which longtime atomweight GOAT Ayaka Hamasaki lost to undefeated Seika Izawa at RIZIN 33. Zappitella said she is not interested in facing either of them as she is planning a move up to 115-pounds after her upcoming fight.

I’m going to 115 after this fight. Doesn’t interest me.” she said.

I’m going up in weight. So any fight at 105 past this does not interest me.” she continued.

Zappitella’s announcement is certainly an exciting one. The ‘Half Pint’ has proven to be one of the best atomweight fighters in the world, with her sole career losses coming years ago by way of very close decisions to top-ranked talent. The move likely signifies that Zappitella has intentions of competing in the UFC alongside some of the greatest and most well-known fighters in the world including Rose Namajunas, Zhang Weili and Carla Esparza.

Before Zappitella makes her strawweight debut, she’ll be looking to once again get past Jessica Delboni when she puts her atomweight title on the line in the main event of Invicta FC 45 on January 12, 2022.
