The UFC is looking to book a huge women’s strawweight title fight for the upcoming UFC 261 pay-per-view event on April 24.
According to a report by Combate, the UFC is targeting a strawweight title fight between Weili Zhang and Rose Namajunas for the main event of UFC 261 on April 24. Former UFC strawweight champ Carla Esparza is also set to feature on the card when she takes on surging contender, Yan Xiaonan. Esparza will apparently be brought in to fight Zhang if things fall through with Rose.
The UFC were previously in negotiations with the Singaporean government to host UFC 261 in their country on April 24. However, plans are said to have fallen through and the company will now hold the card in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States.
Zhang (21-1-0) has not been in action since March 2020 when she defeated Joanna Jedrzejczyk via split decision to retain the UFC strawweight championship. The 31-year-old initially captured the title after knocking out Jessica Andrade in the first round back in August 2019. Also known as ‘Magnum’, Zhang owns additional promotional wins over the likes of Tecia Torres, Jessica Aguilar and Danielle Taylor.
Namajunas (9-4-0) is coming off a decision victory over Jessica Andrade at the UFC 251 event last July. The win was a big one for the ‘Thug’, who originally lost her 115-pound title by way of a knockout to Andrade in 2019. Avenging her most recent career loss, Namajunas now looks to become the first ever two-time UFC strawweight champion when she challenges Zhang for the belt.
UFC 261 takes place on April 24, 2021, from the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. The main card will be aired live on ESPN+ pay-per-view from 10pm ET.
