A big talking point in the WMMA world over the last week has been about who’s next to challenge Valentina Shevchenko for the UFC flyweight championship.
Shevchenko (23-3-0) captured the vacant UFC flyweight championship in December 2018 with a unanimous decision victory over Joanna Jedrzejczyk. She has since gone on to defend it an incredible seven times against the likes of Jessica Andrade, Jennifer Maia, Kaitlyn Chookagian, and most recently Taila Santos.
With victories over a large number of the ranked contenders, talk has turned to who exactly should be next for Shevchenko.
Manon Fiorot picked up a big win over the number-one ranked flyweight contender Katlyn Chookagian at this past Saturday’s UFC 280 event. The win puts the French-woman in top position for a shot at Shevchenko. However, Fiorot has expressed that she would ideally like one more fight before challenging for the title, although she does believe her striking will cause Shevchenko problems when they finally meet.
The next highest ranked contender who has yet to receive a shot at the flyweight queen is Alexa Grasso. The Mexican is currently 4-0 at 125-pounds following a recent unanimous decision victory over Viviane Araujo. However, Grasso has also said that she would like one more fight before challenging for gold.
Taila Santos lost a razor close split decision to Shevchenko at UFC 275 earlier this year and has been campaigning for a rematch ever since. The Brazilian found a lot of success in the fight, particularly in the grappling department, landing multiple takedowns and attempting several submissions.
