Chelsea Chandler will be heading into 2023 on a big high after making her UFC debut in spectacular fashion this past October.

Chelsea Chandler put on a showcase in her UFC debut last month.

Chandler made her UFC debut last month, knocking out Julija Stoliarenko in the very first round following some vicious ground-and-pound. The fight was contested at a catchweight of 140-pounds. Following the win, Chandler announced plans to compete at both bantamweight (135) and featherweight (145).

During a recent chat with WMMA Rankings, Chandler revealed that if her next fight is at bantamweight, she would be interested in number-six-ranked Yana Kunitskaya.

I want to climb the 135 ranks as fast as possible. Yana is ranked at #6 right now, and she went the full distance with Stoliarenko when they fought. Me finishing Stoliarenko in my debut kind of shows that I’m already at that level.” Chandler explained.

Last week, UFC featherweight Norma Dumont told WMMA Rankings she is being ordered to move down to bantamweight at the request of the UFC. She believes the 145-pound division will soon be closed. Chandler believes the UFC should definitely reconsider and feels she has a lot more power at featherweight.

The more exciting fights are at 145. I’m entertaining and I have a lot more power at 45 and they definitely should reconsider, and open it up. Or at least giving me a couple of fights at 45.” she said.

Chandler says she would love for the UFC to book a 145-pound match-up with Norma Dumont in an attempt to change the organization’s mind and show them what female featherweights are capable of.

The problem is none of the chicks at 45 have done anything extraordinary and they’re all really far behind which is why the UFC doesn’t really want to push the division. I think if I was afforded the opportunity to fight against Norma Dumont, maybe they would change their mind.” she said.

Chandler is interested in taking fights at both bantamweight and featherweight.

Whilst Chandler is happy to compete in the UFC’s bantamweight division, she does believe the closure of featherweight will lead to issues for others fighters on the roster.

Look at Macy [Chiasson] who recently tried to get to 135. She couldn’t make it and she looks exhausted in her fights at 135, no chin at 35. Norma already tried 135 and she couldn’t make it either. Bea Malecki is another example, she has no chin at at 135, it’s too much weight to cut.” she said.

When you cut that much weight you risk of a concussion and a KO go up way higher. Bea [Malecki] can’t even fight now because her concussions are so bad.” she continued.
