Dana White on ruined plans for super-fight between teammates Amanda Nunes & Kayla Harrison

UFC president Dana White has revealed that he was looking to book a super-fight between Amanda Nunes & Kayla Harrison prior to the former’s upset defeat to Julianna Pena this past Saturday.

Kayla Harrison & Amanda Nunes train together at the highly-acclaimed American Top Team gym.

Nunes suffered an upset second-round submission loss to Julianna Pena at this past Saturday’s UFC 269 event, losing the bantamweight championship which she has held since 2016. After capturing the title from Miesha Tate at UFC 200, she went on to successfully defeat the likes of Holly Holm, Ronda Rousey, Cris Cyborg, Germaine de Randamie and Megan Anderson. The loss against Pena is amongst one of the biggest upsets in MMA history.

During the recent UFC 269 post-fight press conference, White revealed that the UFC were looking at booking a showdown between American Top Team (ATT) teammates – Nunes and PFL star, the two-time Olympic Gold Medallist in Judo, Kayla Harrison (12-0-0). Unfortunately these plans will now be put on hold due to the loss.

For a Kayla Harrison, the Amanda Nunes fight was huge. If they would have faced off, it would have been a massive, mega-million dollar fight. … Let me tell you, if Amanda Nunes had won tonight, the Kayla Harrison fight would have been one of the biggest fights that you would have ever seen.” White said.

Harrison (12-0-0) is the number-one ranked women’s lightweight fighter in the world after successfully winning PFL’s 155-pound tournament in both 2019 and 2021. The Olympian has made it known that she is willing to move down in weight-class in order to battle the pound-for-pound greatest female fighters in the world.

  1. I don’t see the problem here. If Kayla would fight Nunes it would be at featherweight, and Nunes is still the featherweight champ. Nunes’ rematch with Pena will probably happen in March or April, and after that she will have to defend her featherweight belt again. So, if Kayla would sign with the UFC she can first fight somebody else, and then Nunes in the second half of 2022.
