Chelsea Chandler has big plans for 2023 following a show-stopping UFC debut this past October.
Chandler made her UFC debut last month, knocking out Julija Stoliarenko in the very first round following some vicious ground-and-pound. The fight was contested at a catchweight of 140 pounds. Following the win, Chandler announced plans to compete at both bantamweight (135) and featherweight (145).
During a recent chat with WMMA Rankings, Chandler revealed she is looking to climb up the UFC bantamweight rankings as fast as possible. Her dominant win over the very tough Julija Stoliarenko gave her a lot of confidence, and she is ready for a huge step up in competition next. She wants number-six ranked UFC bantamweight contender Yana Kunitskaya.
“I want to climb the 135 ranks as fast as possible. Yana is ranked at #6 right now, and she went the full distance with Stoliarenko when they fought. Me finishing Stoliarenko in my debut kind of shows that I’m already at that level.” Chandler explained.
A match-up between Kunitskaya and Chandler would certainly be an exciting one for the 135-pound weight class. For Chandler, it would be an opportunity to show the world that she is indeed the future of the bantamweight division. For Kunitskaya, it would be a chance to show she is no stepping stone for anyone by defending her number-six position.
Kunitskaya is currently getting back into fighting shape after giving birth to her daughter Alisa Santos this past May. She is expected to return to the cage in early 2023.
