#Bellator201 results: Ilima-Lei Macfarlane submits Alejandra Lara to retain title

Tonight, at Bellator 201 in Temecula, Calif., the Bellator flyweight title was on the line as champion Ilima-Lei Macfarlane locked horns with Colombian challenger Alejandra “Azul” Lara.

RECAP: A touch of gloves and a fast start to this one! Ilima-Lei looks for a sloppy takedown and ends up on the bottom. Immediately from guard, Macfarlane is throwing up submission attempts– specifically armbars and triangle. “Azul” displaying some fantastic defense and balance– surviving the attempts and ending the round in the dominant position. Fun grappling exchanges in that first round. Midway through the second round, Ilima grounds Alejandra with a beautiful lateral drop. She works from top position but Lara is remaining calm and minimizing the damage. The round ends with Ilima-Lei working to take the back of Lara. Round three! Lara misses a spinning back elbow/first and Macfarlane grabs her back drags her to the ground. Ilima-Lei achieves full mount but Lara is doing everything right in the defense. Alejandra’s arm is loose and Ilima snaps on an armbar! It is fully extended! Lara is as tough as they come– she utilizes her legs to save her arm, however, Ilima is able to adjust the armbar and re-extend the arm. Lara taps!

Ilima-Lei Macfarlane def. Alejandra Lara via third-round submission (armbar).

Kudos to both fighters on an excellent showing. #AndStill!

  1. Ilima MacFarlane still bulldozing in on her opponent without any set ups. What happens when she can’t over power her opponent?

    1. Good competitive fight, but you’re right, she had better work on her set up technique if she ever moves over to the UFC. It’ll be interesting to see how she does against Letourneau.

  2. OMG! Can you UFC Cheerleaders give it a rest about evaluating every fight with that MOVING ON TO THE UFC garbage. That has long gotten old. The set up has to be better than just bulldozing in with any top opponent.

    1. Well that’s where she’ll have to go if she wants to test herself against the best. Letourneau couldn’t make it in the top 5 at either SW or BW there. Perhaps she had a chance for making it in the top 5 at FW but probably not.

  3. Give it a rest. The UFC started their Flyweight division after Valerie Letourneau left the UFC. So their Flyweight division is just a fledgling division where their champion hasn’t even defended her title once and was determined through a reality show.
