knockout of the year
JILL: A few great head kicks come to mind when considering the best WMMA knockout of 2018, but one-punch knockout power in the strawweight division is far too rare to ignore. Such power is precisely what Jessica Andrade demonstrated against Karolina Kowalkiewicz at UFC 228.
In keeping with her usual approach, Andrade was relentless with the forward pressure. It wasn’t long – just a few minutes into the first round – before she landed a right hand that crumpled Kowalkiewicz, a la Francis Ngannou on Alistair Overeem. As if the knockout wasn’t impressive enough, it cemented a record-breaking victory for Andrade – she became the first woman in UFC history to hit 10 Octagon wins.
TERENCE: Jessica Andrade versus Karolina Kowalkiewicz. The Polish fighter had gone toe-to-toe with Joanna Jędrzejczyk and Rose Namajunas, but suffered her first pro KO loss to the Brazilian dynamo.
