Welterweight World Rankings: Holli Salazar begins her rise following Wednesday night’s Alaska FC 136 victory

The WMMA welterweight world rankings have been updated following this past Wednesday’s Alaska FC 136 event.

Salazar is the number-three ranked women’s welterweight fighter in the world.

Holli Salazar (1-0) debuts at number 3 following a successful professional debut against highly-touted Maura Tynanes at the event. The victory means she is ranked just below undefeated Russian grappler Svetlana Khautova and combat sports veteran, number-one ranked Killastina Makihele. Tynanes meanwhile drops to number 4, just below striking specialist Dinara Shukeeva.

Germany’s Kristin Handel and former KOTC star Al-Lanna Jones sit at 6 and 7. RIZIN star Crystal Stokes, teammate of Cris Cyborg and Gabi Garcia, takes the number 8 spot. Rounding out the top ten are Kola Shippentower, a friend of women’s boxing pioneer Laila Ali, as well as Alaska FC’s Avril Straub.

The women’s welterweight division is still very much a young and developing one when it comes to MMA. However, over the past 12 months organizations such as Alaska FC, RIZIN FF, DEEP JEWELS and FIGHT NIGHTS have begun signing welterweight women from the amateur scene as well as other combat sports in a bid to develop larger women’s weight-classes. It’s likely the rankings will change significantly by the end of the year as the women begin to get in more fights
