#UFC227 results: Weili Zhang decisions Danielle Taylor to win Octagon debut

Tonight at UFC 227 in Los Angeles, the first of two exciting strawweight showdowns takes place on UFC Fight Pass as China’s Weili Zhang makes her UFC debut opposite “Dynamite” Danielle Taylor.

RECAP: The long-awaited debut of China’s brightest prospect versus former King of the Cage strawweight champion Danielle Taylor is sure to be an exciting one! Like the majority of her fights, Taylor is at a height and reach disadvantage. The fight was mainly contested on the feet, aside from two minutes in round one following a Zhang takedown and a Taylor heel hook attempt. Weili dictated the pace on the feet for the most part– she threw a great variety of strikes each time and never let her combinations get predictable. At the end of round one, Taylor landed a nice right hand that appeared to rock Zhang. Round two was very similiar– including Danielle finding success at the end of the round with a power left hook. The striking variety of Zhang made the difference in round three– she incorporates a beautiful side kick that consistently disrupted any momentum or rhythm Taylor began to pick up.

THOUGHTS: This was a fun bout! Both fighters landed quality shots throughout the fight but Zhang had more tools to work with. I love her side kick– a weapon that I believe is underused in MMA. She has top-notch stand up and is extremely fast and strong. With the nerves of her UFC debut out of the way on a big PPV card, I am curios to see what she can do. Danielle Taylor did well– her stature unfortunatly severely limits in this weight class. She has good pop in her hands but is often unable to work on the inside to really let them have affect.

Weili Zhang def. Danielle Taylor via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

  1. While I had higher expectations for Weili’s UFC debut, she did well against a tough, if under-sized, competitor. Danielle’s only been finished once and she avenged that KO with a TKO of her own. Hope the UFC opens an atomweight division soon, as Danielle would probably do well there, having defeated highly ranked Seo Hee Ham.
