UFC 231 Predictions

Tonight, some of MMA’s toughest ladies will do battle as UFC 231 touches down in Toronto, Canada, for one of this year’s most anticipated cards.

On the FS1 Prelims, former bantamweights collide as top ten flyweights when Katlyn Chookagian battles Jessica Eye in a bout that can determine the division’s next title challenger. Also on FS1, the featured prelim sees former strawweight title challenger Claudia Gadelha face the streaking Nina Ansaroff. Finally, in the co-main event of the evening, flyweight gold is on the line as Valentina Shevchenko and Joanna Jędrzejczyk add another chapter to their rivalry.

Before the cage door closes, check out the WMMA Rankings panel predictions below!

CLAUDIA GADELHA VS NINA ANSAROFF

JILL: Nina Ansaroff is super talented and riding the high of a three-fight win streak. Claudia Gadelha has fought the best of the best, having beaten one former champion of her division and narrowly falling short against the other (twice!). Furthermore, it seems she has been laying low and working hard. She’s going to show us tools old and new, and out-grapple her opponent. Gadelha by submission.

PICK – CLAUDIA GADELHA

TERENCE:  Ansaroff has been improving and come up the rankings, but she’s yet to face a fighter the caliber of Gadelha. Claudia should outclass her in every area. Prediction – Claudia Gadelha by unanimous decision.

PICK – CLAUDIA GADELHA

STEPHEN: Nina Ansaroff has really came into her own ad of late but Claudia Gadelha is where the win streak stops. Gadelha TKO Round 2.

PICK – CLAUDIA GADELHA

IDREES: Claudia Gadelha.

PICK – CLAUDIA GADELHA

NICK: This is an exciting and well-deserved step up in competition for Nina. She’s well-rounded, comes from a good camp, and has consistently shown improvements. I think she may be a little too willing to play guard and fight Gadelha’s type of fight, and for that reason I have Gadelha winning this one via a grappling heavy attack.

PICK – CLAUDIA GADELHA

KATLYN CHOOKAGIAN VS JESSICA EYE

JILL: A brown belt in jiu-jitsu and only one loss under her belt, Katlyn Chookagian is no joke. Jessica Eye has been in the game longer, however. She may not have the winningest of records, but she has more experience than her opponent and is a considerably well-rounded fighter. I’m going to have to go with the veteran athlete on this one. Ultimately, I think her striking abilities will be too much for Chookagian. Eye by TKO.

PICK – JESSICA EYE

TERENCE: This is an interesting matchup between two well-rounded fighters who are trying to make their marks in the division. Eye is on a two-fight win streak, but Chookagian has only lost to Liz Carmouche in her pro career. I expect her to take control of the fight and keep it. Katlyn Chookagain by unanimous decision.

PICK – KATLYN CHOOKAGIAN

STEPHEN: Chookagian might be the most underrated female on the UFC’s roster. But Jessica Eye will be a tough test. Chookagian wins because of her pinpoint accurate striking .Chookagian, Unanimous Decision.

PICK – KATLYN CHOOKAGAIN

IDREES: Katlyn Chookagain.

PICK – KATLYN CHOOKAGIAN

NICK: I am a big Chookagian fan and believe she is grossly underrated! I think Katlyn can match outdo Eye anywhere the fight goes. I’ve got Katlyn taking home a fun, hard-fought decision between two hungry contenders.

PICK – KATLYN CHOOKAGIAN

VALENTINA SHEVCHENKO VS JOANNA JEDRZEJCZYK

JILL: This outcome is incredibly difficult to predict, and for a multitude of reasons I don’t think Muay Thai bouts that took place nearly a decade ago offer very credible insights. We’ve never before seen Joanna in the octagon at the flyweight level. Being spared a brutal cut could do wonders for her. We’ve also seen next to no ground game from her. It’s quite possible that Valentina – who has shown us she can hold her own on the mat – will surprise us and attempt to navigate her opponent’s takedown defense. If that’s the case, we’ll finally see what Joanna has up her sleeve. Of course, a points-driven striking contest is the stronger possibility. In that case, my heart says Joanna, but pure logic says Schevchenko by unanimous decision.

PICK – VALENTINA SHEVCHENKO

TERENCE: They fought three times in Muay Thai and Valentina won all three times. While that doesn’t necessarily translate to MMA, what should make the difference is that Valentina is a much more well-rounded fighter and Joanna seems to be in a slump. I don’t expect her to get out if it in this fight. Prediction – Valentina Shevchenko by second round KO/TKO.

PICK – VALENTINA SHEVCHENKO

STEPHEN: This will be their 4th time fighting in combat sports but only the first in MMA. The other 3 times were in Muay Thai where Valentina shevchenko beat Joanna Jedrzejczyk all 3 times. Good thing this isn’t Muay Thai. Joanna wins in a hard fought battle. Joanna, Unanimous Decision.

IDREES: Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

PICK – JOANNA JEDRZEJCZYK

NICK: Oh gosh! Honestly, I’m speechless for this fight. I think it’s going to be a 5-round war. My head and heart are torn! I’m going to lean on size and momentum here.

PICK – VALENTINA SHEVCHENKO
