UFC 228: Nicco Montano vs Valentina Shevchenko officially cancelled

The UFC has released an official statement cancelling the UFC 228 co-main event— a women’s flyweight title fight between champion Nicco Montano and challenger Valentina Shevchenko.

Multiple reports surfaced Friday morning that Montano was transported to a local hospital. She did not weigh-in and details regarding her condition were scarce.

Shevchenko still weighed in, registering 124.5 pounds on the official scale.

Moments ago, the UFC officially pulled Montano vs Shevchenko from the card. Sources say Shevchenko will not be fighting a late replacement. Read the UFC’s statement below:

As a precautionary measure, UFC flyweight Nicco Montano was transported to a medical facility Friday morning due to health concerns.  The scheduled championship bout between Montano and Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 228 has been cancelled.”

UFC 228 continues with 13 fights.

  1. Congratulations, Valentina Shevchenko said the fight would not happen because of Montano and she was correct. Hopefully, Valentina Shevchenko gets paid something since she made weight. Give Valentina Shevchenko a Interim Flyweight Title bout in the near future because I get the feeling that Nicco Montano is going to be out for awhile. And we all know that the UFC loves their Interim titles.

  2. I had just posted previously earlier this week on another site that the odds shouldn’t be so much whether Shevchenko or Montano won; that was a given, but whether Montano would even show. Shevchenko had serious doubts as late as yesterday. Sadly, she was fully justified in those doubts.

Given the likelihood of her pulling out, I had also called for the UFC for them to select someone as a back up interim title fighter just in case and pay for them. Sadly, they dropped the ball there as well.
