The Ultimate Fighter 28 Finale results: Antonina Shevchenko wins unanimous decision in UFC debut

Tonight, at the TUF 28 Finale show in Las Vegas, the older Shevchenko sister makes her UFC debut versus “Firefist” Ji Yeon Kim.

RECAP: This fight has the making of a stand-up war. Antonina in the southpaw stance with the Muay Thai style and Kim in the orthodox stance with the boxing style. You can hear Valentin in the corner of her sister (AYYYY), encouraging her on. Antonina throws some accurate combos to get started. There looked to be an accidental headbutt when entering the clinch but neither fighter looked phased. “Pantera” landed a beautiful front kick to the face but Kim ate it with no problem and continued to hunt for the right hand. At one point Shevchenko looked to be off-balance against the fence. Round one ended with Shevchenko dragging Kim to the ground via head and arm throw. Shevchenko starts to pull ahead in the second round. Kim is really looking for the right hand in the second round but Antonina appears to be a little bit quicker and is throwing with more variety that is disrupting the rhythm of Kim. On to the final round. Early on, Shevchenko follows Kim to the ground after catching her kick. Kim does a good job of keeping Antonina contained. As Kim is getting up, Shevchenko lands a knee to the neck/chin of Kim. Yves Lavigne stops the action. Shevchenko gets a warning and loses position but no point is taken. Kim stays in the fight but the speed and accuracy of Shevchenko should win this for her.

Antonina Shevchenko def. Ji Yeon Kim via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

  1. I was looking forward to this fight, but I’m afraid I was a bit underwhelmed with both fighters’ performances. It seemed that both were a little overly cautious of the other’s striking ability. I hope it’s no indication of what we may be seeing from Antonina’s sister next week.

I did not have overly high hopes for the TUF Finale and found that a pleasant surprise. Both seem to give it their all.

    1. The 2 sisters should still be different even if they may train together sometimes. What did you think of some of the recent upsets, in separate topic ? Contender Series winner Lauren Mueller getting subbed by the Chinese gal ? and JAG’s continuing slide from strawweight grace, losing to another Chinese gal by submission ?

      1. my double posting friend! Jag is finished as a top 15 strawweight now that the division is stacked with fighters, but she did just fight the girl that is by far the best strawweight in Asia (Zhang Weili) and a true top 5 talent. Zhang is the dark horse of the division and she will rise through the ranks very fast.

    3. JR, Antonina is the more aggressive and active sister, Valentina is usually more conservative then her sister in general. Joanna will make it a scrap because that’s who she is, but on her own Valentina needs a willing opponent or there will be more of a tarring contest than a fight. and this is looking at here entire fighting career. she has less than 7 fights in the UFC, so people don’t have the best idea of Valentina just yet.
