Tessa Simpson eyeing atomweight world title shot with a victory at Invicta FC 23

Ahead of her Invicta FC 23 fight against former atomweight world champion Herica Tiburcio, rising contender Tessa Simpson recently spoke to MMA Weekly.

Simpson has her sights set on becoming the Invicta FC atomweight world champion.

Simpson, 5-1, will look to score her fourth consecutive win on Saturday. She last fought at Invicta FC 18, defeating Simona Soukupova by way of unanimous decision.

The 30-year-old, also known as “The Typhoon”, is aware that a victory over a former world champion in Tiburcio would be a big one. She plans on getting the finish.

Her camp knows that I’m good on the ground, and that my striking is good too, so I think that I’m a hard opponent for her to beat,” Simpson said of Tiburcio. “She has to get past me to get to a title shot, but my plans are to make a run for the title, so it’s a great fight for both of us, but I definitely plan to come out with a dominant win.

A win’s a win, but we like to dominate a fight, and would like to finish Herica. But I’ll just go in there, follow the game plan and do the best I can.”

The current Invicta FC atomweight champion, Ayaka Hamasaki, has cleaned out the majority of top contenders in her division. Simpson knows that a victory on Saturday could mean that she is next in line for a title shot.

I think it’s probably going to be up to Invicta, the matchmakers and the timing,” said Simpson. “I’m hoping that with this win that it will put me right up there for a title shot next. They need someone to step up and fight Ayaka (Hamasaki), so I’m ready for that next challenge after that fight.”

Invicta FC 23 takes place this Saturday May 20th from the Scottish Rite Temple in Kansas City, Missouri, United States. The event will be streamed live on UFC Fight Pass.
