Tecia Torres releases lengthy statement on UFC 224, says she agrees with corner’s decision to make Pennington continue

UFC strawweight Tecia Torres has released a lengthy statement about last night’s UFC 224 main event featuring her girlfriend, Raquel Pennington, and ATT teammate, Amanda Nunes.

Both couples train at the American Top Team.

Torres (10-2) couldn’t be more proud of Pennington for her attempt at trying to capture the bantamweight title from Nunes.

I am extremely proud of my lady. You are a warrior babe. Fought every second you possibly could. You continue to amaze me daily. You motivate me to work hard and one day too receive the same opportunity to fight for a UFC championship. We are the 1%ers. Very few will ever know what we go thru as fighters and an even smaller percentage will ever earn the chance to fight on such a big stage and for a world title.” Torres wrote.

Pennington was left a bloody mess by the end of the fight, and told her corner after round four that she no longer wanted to continue. Her corner forced her to continue, prompting several top UFC fighters to speak out in disgust at their decision. Torres has jumped to the corner’s defense.

Both us and our coaches agree with the decision made to go into the 5th round. We know Raquel more than anyone else and know if we let her give up on herself going into the last round she would have always regretted it. She fought with heart and grit until the end.” she said.

Take a look at Torres’ full statements below:

No one will never know the feeling of seeing and knowing the person you love most and share your life with step into the octagon with one of your best friends. So many emotions ran thru my mind the entire fight camp leading up to last night. I could barely contain myself at weigh ins, fight night, etc. I prayed to god to protect both ladies. I truly believed in Raquel and her capabilities to come out victorious. I always will. Both Amanda and Raquel are so damn tough. Congrats to my friend for a great performance and getting the job done. I love both Mandy and Nene and our friendship remains intact. #Proud #Memories #Friends @raquel_pennington @amanda_leoa @ninaansaroff PS: We are so crazy ass chicks! Badass! & We wouldn't want it any other way! Loving the life we live!!

  1. I wouldn’t have expected anything else outta Tecia; she’s simply not able to have the level of objectivity most other people on the planet can with regard to something like this, IMO. Sure, Raquel might have regretted her choice, but it’s arguably better to regret your own choice than someone else’s. If Nunes wasn’t her friend she coulda gotten royally REKT out there by an opponent with bad intentions; hell, even a freak shot connecting coulda done some serious mischief to an already highly compromised Pennington. To come away merely with injured pride is the BEST possible outcome from something like this — I’m glad this is no more serious than it is, and I still say fuck those corner-people despite Torres’ statement.
