Rose Namajunas unsure of timeline for UFC return, currently rehabbing neck injury

Strawweight champion Rose Namajunas has been relatively quiet since her first UFC title defense at UFC 223.

“Thug” recently appeared on Ariel Hewlani’s MMA Show,  airing on ESPN, to discuss what’s been going on in her life since 223.

After two fights in six months versus Joanna Jędrzejczyk, Namajunas is home in Colorado, healing both spiritually, mentally, and physically. As for the physical aspect, Namajunas revealed that she’s been rehabbing with a neck fracture and stenosis.

“Physcially I’ve got some injuries that I’ve been dealing with for a while. I had– I have a neck fracture and some stenosis, which means the spinal cord that goes through your verterbrae or wahtever– the hole for it is a little bit smaller because of the fracture. There’s times I was getting real bad headaches every day in training camp. Not just from physical activity, but from the stress would aggravate even more. Flying places would make it worse. That’s something I’ve been focusing on– doing little exercises and lots of rehab and stuff. Just really looking into it, there’s not a lot of information out there…”

Luckily, Namajunas says she does not need surgery and the headaches appear to be getting better.

As for a timeline for her return– “Thug” says she isn’t in any rush to get back in there.

“I don’t know. Like I kind of have to see how things play out. I have no interest in getting right back in there at the moment. My neck is the most important thing at the moment. Honestly,  I think the top five, after beating Joanna twice– and for her to be so far, still…the level that she’s at…it’s hard for me to see who’s the top five or who’s the next contender. I feel like the top five, there needs to be more of a clear contender at the moment.”
