RIZIN FF president Nobuyuki Sakakibara issues statement on Garcia VS Gagloeva incident, confirms plans for rematch

Last weekend’s RIZIN Fighting Federation 6 event was hit with controversy when it came to the women’s heavyweight fight between number-one ranked Gabi Garcia and Russian boxing champ, Oxana Gagloeva.

The fight lasted only 16 seconds and ended in a no-contest. Garcia landed an accidental eye poke in the first round, Gagloeva had five minutes to recover but refused to continue. She looked visibly upset and was seen telling the RIZIN staff that she believes Garcia poked her in the eye on purpose. The commentators quickly refuted these claims, explaining that Garcia was setting up a kick and had her hand out whilst doing so.

Since the fight, it has been revealed that Gagloeva suffered a severely damaged cornea due to the eye-poke. Meanwhile, Garcia has publicly branded the Russian a “p**sy” and “coward“, as well as claiming that Oxana is lying about the eye injury.

RIZIN FF president, Nobuyuki Sakakibara, has finally issued an official statement on the situation. He admits the anger between the pair is troubling, however he seemingly confirms a rematch, saying that both women should let out their frustrations the next time they meet.

Accidental incidents in fighting sports will always be there. For both fighters  it had unfortunate results. You will be troubled by the incomplete burning anger between the pair, but let each one explode with their anger and frustration in their next fight. I hope Oxana’s eyes will recover soon” Sakakibara said.

RIZIN Fighting Federation 6 took place on 30 July from the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. The event was aired live on pay-per-view.
