California’s Alyssa Garcia has stunned the Japanese crowd by defeating the home town hero and top ten ranked atomweight Kanna Asakura.
The fight largely saw Asakura attempting to take Garcia to the ground. Garcia showed excellent takedown defense, successfully defending the majority of takedowns, getting the fight into the clinch and landing brutal knees to the body which had a visible affect on the Japanese star. The few times Garcia was taken down, she succesfully managed to defend from bottom taking minimal damage and even going for her own submission attempts. All three judges scored the bout in Garcia’s favour.
23 year old Garcia was overcome with emotion after the her victory was made official, hugging her coach and mentor UFC superstar Josh Barnett. She spoke to us prior to the fight telling us how much Barnett has helped her “I’d like to thank Josh [Barnett] and my teammates for putting time and effort into getting me ready for this fight. A lot of people have influenced me on the way and I appreciate all of it. She now improves her record to 2-2-0. She has a very close split decision loss to number 7 ranked atomweight, the undefeated Julia Jones. She also has a loss to 115 pound strawweight Celine Haga in a fight which she was severely undersized. The win over number 10 ranked Kanna Asakura is huge for the young star heading into 2017. She tells us she plans to stay very active in 2017.
