Rebecca Ruth and Juliana Velasquez to do battle at Bellator 197

Bellator MMA has announced that a pivotal match-up in the 125-pound division will take place at next month’s Bellator 197 event in St. Charles, Missouri. The flyweight contest will see Rebecca “Ruthless” Ruth return to action to take on Juliana Velasquez. The news was reported by the promotion on its official website.

Rebecca Ruth (6-2 MMA, 1-1 Bellator) saw a four-fight winning streak snapped at Bellator 157 where she suffered a second-round submission loss to eventual flyweight champion Ilima-lei Macfarlane. The defeat was only the second in the Missourian’s professional career. She has finished all but one of her victories, with three ending in the first round. Ruth’s biggest win to date came in the form of a decision triumph over Ukrainian standout Lena Ovchynnikova. “Ruthless” has not seen action in almost two years but hopes to stay active in 2018.

Juliana Velasquez (6-0 MMA, 1-0 Bellator) was one of the most highly touted prospects on the regional scene in Brazil before signing with Bellator. She made her name as a bantamweight but the Team Nogueira product decided to drop 10 pounds to try her luck at flyweight in the Bellator cage. She debuted for the promotion in December, taking home a second-round submission victory over China’s Na Liang. Velasquez will enter enemy territory on April 13 when she battles Ruth in Ruth’s home state.

With Valerie Letourneau positioning for a title bout at Bellator 200, the fight between Ruth and Velasquez could see the winner in great position to challenge for the belt sometime this year.

Bellator 197 takes place at the Family Arena in St. Charles, Missouri, on April 13. The card is headlined by a lightweight title fight between champion Brent Primus and former title holder, Michael Chandler.
