Fans believe Joanne Calderwood is most deserving of the next shot at UFC flyweight champion, Valentina Shevchenko.
Valentina Shevchenko successfully defended the flyweight title at this past Saturday’s UFC 247 event, defeating Katlyn Chookagian by way of a third-round TKO.
At the post-fight press conference, Shevchenko revealed she is keen for a quick turnaround and wants to fight either Joanne Calderwood, Jennifer Maia or Roxanne Modafferi next.
Following Shevchenko’s comments, WMMA Rankings held a Twitter poll asking fans which of the three they feel is most deserving of a shot at UFC flyweight gold. 49% of readers believe Calderwood should be next in line, with her teammate, Roxanne Modafferi, following in second place with 38.8%. Jennifer Maia was the least popular choice at just 12.1%.
Fans also elaborated in the comments section of the poll. The general consensus seems to be that Calderwood is most deserving due to the fact she is the next highest ranked after Eye and Chookagian, who Shevchenko has recently beat. However, many fans also believe Modafferi could be a marketable match-up for the champ due to her win over her sister, Antonina Shevchenko, as well as a recent high-profile win over Maycee Barber. Fans feel Maia is undeserving of a title shot due to her failure to make weight on multiple occasions, whilst many also want Shevchenko to move up to bantamweight for a trilogy against Amanda Nunes.
