Invicta FC featherweight standout Pam Sorenson believes that Amanda Nunes should vacate her UFC bantamweight title if she’s planning on challenging for the featherweight title later this year.
A superfight between Amanda Nunes and Cris Cyborg for the UFC featherweight title has been teased since last month. Cyborg has stated numerous times she hopes the fight will take place during international fight week at the UFC 226 event on July 7.
Sorenson feels as though Nunes should be made to vacate her title due to the fact that by the time she challenges Cyborg for the 145-pound belt, it will have been almost one year since her last bantamweight title defense.
“Hopefully that means she’s vacating the 135 belt then? Her last fight was in September, if she’s going to fight Cyborg in July, that means the 135 belt won’t be defended for over a year. Not fair to hold that division up and then what would that mean for Pennington? Does she get put on the shelf until Nunes can defend?” Sorenson wrote in a public comment on Facebook.
Nunes last defended her belt at the UFC 215 event this past September when she defeated Valentina Shevchenko via split decision. She owns an additional 48-second TKO title defense against Ronda Rousey and won the belt after submitting Miesha Tate in the first-round of their UFC 200 encounter.
Meanwhile, Invicta FC’s Sorenson is currently proving to be a force in the featherweight division and has won five of her last six. The 31-year-old is being tipped by many, including Cris Cyborg, to eventually join the UFC if the organization decide to sign more 145-pound talent.
