Paige VanZant injured, UFC 216 fight against Jessica Eye has been cancelled

Next week’s UFC 216 pay-per-view event has lost one of its most anticipated fights of the night. The Paige VanZant vs. Jessica Eye flyweight fight is off due to an injury suffered by PVZ, the UFC officially announced the news earlier today.

According to MMA Fighting, VanZant suffered an intervertebral disc injury training jiu-jitsu and was advised by her doctor to avoid training for a few weeks. VanZant won’t need to undergo surgery.

VanZant hasn’t fought since her December submission loss to Michelle Waterson, while Eye’s last fight was in September 2016. Eye was scheduled to fight at UFC 213 in July, however, the fight was scrapped on fight day after Aspen Ladd, her opponent, fell ill.

UFC 216 takes place next Saturday October 7 from the T-Mobile Arena Las Vegas, Nevada, United States

  1. For some reason I feel that it would be a great fit for Paige VanZant to train under Antonio McKee at Antonio McKee’s BodyShop gym. Training with other young fighters like her in A.J. McKee, Kevin Baby Slice Ferguson, Joey Davis, and new addition Aaron Pico, I think it would be great for Paige VanZant. I hope she heals and get back to being 100% and back in the UFC octagon.

  2. It puzzled me why PVZ was moving up to 125 in the first place when she’s just an averaged size SW. She lost to Michelle Waterson, a former atomweight that moved up to SW, and her intent was to take on a BW that’s dropping to FW? Maybe she just finally came to her senses. If she’s suffering “debilitating weight cuts” at her size, she should get a new weight trainer. JJ claims that they’re a lot easier now with hers.

    1. Just to let you know, recently Paige VanZant did a interview on Ariel Helwani’s show and she stated that she was doing unhealthy weight cuts. She may be a short woman, but she probably weighs around 132 to 135 pounds, which is not uncommon. I think fans get so wrapped up in the magazine advertised size of what we perceive short women to walk around weighing, when that perception isn’t reality.

      1. Paige’s career is not going well. I remember when she came on the scene two years ago she mentioned a disc injury. At age 23 she has another similar one? probably due to meathead training methods. Sparring is one thing, but the ground work probably invovles strong slams to the mat, and she probably doesn’t understand that cartilidege is plastic and doesnt’ recover like even a broken bone. She’s destroying her body….
