This Friday at ONE Championship’s big 50th event rising 115 pound prospect, April Osenio make her return to the cage to face Jenny Huang. Osenio (2-1-0) talks to us about the upcoming bout, Huang’s weaknesses, ONE Champion Angela Lee, why she fights, UFC goals and more.
You’ll be fighting Jenny Huang this Friday for One Championship. What are your opinions on Huang as an opponent?
Jenny is a very good fighter. I should not take her for granted. She is good on the ground and has won twice in ONE by submission so I think my fight with her is going to be a very exciting fight.
What holes do you see in Huang’s game?
All I can say is that I have a height advantage over her because I’m taller than her and I think I am stronger than her.
I am training with Team Lakay in the Philippines. In my team, we are not just a simple team but we consider it as our family. We train everyday with each other and we help each other which ever way we can, especially when it comes to our weaknesses in the sport.
How did you first get into fighting?
I entered first as a varsity in Wushu- Sanshou at the University of the Cordilleras and has competed in Wushu tournaments, then I joined Team Lakay under Coach Mark Sangiao to develop my MMA skills and has also competed in amateur MMA competitions until eventually I compete in professional MMA.This fight will be at 115lbs, is this the weight class you feel most comfortable at?
Yes, I am comfortable in this division.
Do you have any aspirations to someday fight for UFC?
Yes, it’s every MMA fighter’s dream to fight for the UFC. But for now, I am comfortable with fighting for ONE Championship and I’m glad to belong in this promotion.
What are your opinions on ONE 115lb Champion Angela Lee?
Angela is a very good fighter and a good representative of female MMA. I hope someday, I would be able to face her and become a champion too.
With a win over Huang, what do you hope is next for you as you approach 2017?
A win over Huang would be a step closer to the title so a fight or two more would prepare me for the belt.
What do you hope to achieve before the end of your career?
I hope I would become a world champion and be able to inspire other women who aspire the same dream or goal, that is my dream.
Is there anything you would like to add, or anyone you want to shoutout?
I would like to take this opportunity to invite everyone to watch and support us in our upcoming fights at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on Friday, December 2, 2016. I would also like to thank everyone for their unending support for us. God bless us all.
