Official poster for 2017’s historical 155lb lightweight championship fight unveiled

History is set to be made in 2017 when number 2 lightweight in the world Sarah “Primal” Patterson will take on former Invicta FC fighter Tamikka “Boom Boom” Brents to determine the 155lb lightweight world champion at Gateway Fighting Series.

Currently no other promotion in the world recognizes a 155lb lightweight championship belt with most major promotions only recognising the divisions between 105lbs to 145lbs. Gateway Fighting Series should be commended for contributing to the continued growth of women’s MMA.

Patterson is ready to make history and become the first ever 155lb lightweight world champion.

32 year old veteran Sarah “Primal” Patterson from Iowa is one of the best fighters in the world and has not been defeated since 2009. She never lets her fights go to a decision, and has finished every single one of her victories, with her finishes ranging from a combination of KO’s and Chokes. She holds notable stoppage wins over number 1 welterweight Killastina Makihele, and number 4 heavyweight Erica Grover. She’s been fighting as a pro for almost fifteen years.

Patterson begun her career back in 2002 as part of the heavyweight division (200lbs+) and has managed to work her way down to her natural weight class of 155 pounds. She tells us about her inspirational transition down to lightweight “as far as the transition, it was a difficult one. I’ve had troubles with overeating. I used to get depressed because I was over weight and then eat to feel better and then the cycle started over. I just had enough I guess. I need to go as far as I can with my MMA dreams before I get much older so now is the time”.

Her opponent for this historic fight was originally scheduled to be number 3 lightweight in the world “The #1 Headbusta” Jozette Cotton. However, due to disputes between Cotton’s management and the organisation, both parties mutually decided now wasn’t the right time for Cotton to fight for the title.

Cotton’s replacement will be Tamikka “Boom Boom” Brents. She makes her return to the cage after over two years away from competition. She is currently on a two fight losing streak with back to back stoppage losses to number 1 lightweight Bobbi-Jo Dalziel and the controversial Fallon Fox.

  1. You forgot to mention that those 2 loses are the ONLY loses that Tamikka Brents has experienced in her 19 fight career. She was 17-0 prior to those loses to very reputable fighters. She was also the #1 ranked amateur lightweight in the world and the #6 ranked professional featherweight in the world.
