Ronda Rousey made her hugely anticipated return to MMA competition on December 30th to challenge Amanda Nunes for the UFC bantamweight championship. This followed a knockout loss to Holly Holm back in November 2015, which was the first loss of her career. Unfortunately, the return ended in disaster as she lost to Amanda Nunes in just 48 seconds via TKO.
Prior to the fight, Rousey’s weight-management coach Mike Dolce revealed he believes her ideal fighting weight would be at 125lbs in the flyweight division. Following December’s loss, this has now led to curiosity on whether the UFC will create the flyweight division for one of their top money makers, Ronda Rousey.
One woman who is behind a potential Rousey 125lb move is the current number one flyweight in the world and the Invicta FC Flyweight champion, Jennifer Maia (14-4-0).
The 28-year-old Brazilian believes Rousey is deserving of having the division created for her if it’s what she wants, due to everything she has done for Women’s MMA “I would be happy with Ronda competing at flyweight in the UFC because through her female MMA went to another level where it had never been before. Before her females had never competed in the UFC. So it would open space for the flyweights to compete in the UFC”.
If the UFC were to create the division, there is no doubt Maia would be one of the women competing, as well as being a possible opponent for Rousey. Maia sounds very confident, telling us “I’m ready to show the world my work“.
Maia is currently on a five fight winning streak which includes a TKO and a KO victory. She last competed back in September when she successfully defended her Invicta FC title taking out top contender Roxanne Modafferi.
