Minna Grusander vs Jinh Yu Frey: Invicta FC 30 Atomweight Championship Showdown

For the last six years, Invicta FC has been the number one organization to watch the future female stars of UFC.

Invicta FC has been the starting point of future champions like Rose Namajunas, Carla Esparza, and Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino, to name a few.  Everything the UFC has done as far as women’s mixed martial arts, Invicta did first. On Saturday, July 21st, Invicta FC 31 will kick off, showcasing new names as well as familiar faces.  The headlining fight will be an atomweight title showdown between Jinh Yu Frey and Minna Grusander.
Before tonight’s action, check out a recap of how Grusander and Frey earned their spot atomweight title contention.

Minna “Brutsku” Grusander is a Finnish fighter holding a record of 6-1-0 and is currently on an impressive 4 win streak– 2 wins by knockout, 2 by submission.  She fights out of Turku, Finland with Finnfighters gym.  Her last bout was a win against Fernanda Priscila in March of 2018, just two days after her 29th birthday.
During her fight against Priscila, Grusander faced a brutal first round where she was dominated with punches and takedowns.  However, Grusander has shown to be a slow starter, a fighter who takes a moment to really soak in her opponents strategy and use it against them later in the fight.  Her brain working feverishly, she chose not to sit between rounds, anxious to get back into the fight.
Round 2 showed to be far more favorable for her as she came out swinging, throwing punches straight down the middle and taking Priscila for a ride that lead straight to the canvas.  It wasn’t long before Grussander had Priscila on the ground against the fence, raining fists on her opponent’s head.  Her fury was so strong and fast Priscila could do nothing but cover up. Fortunately, the referee stepped in and mercifully stopped the fight, giving Grussander another TKO on her  belt. As if auditioning for a broadway run of “The Sound of Music,” Grussander spread her arms and spun circles in the cage, elated with the stoppage.

Jinh Yu Frey is an American fighter hailing from Arlington, Texas. She holds a record of 6-3-0 with 1 TKO and 2 submissions. Frey’s last Invicta FC bout pitted her against St. Louis native Ashley “Smashley” Cummings.  Frey came out strong in the first round, dominating at both striking and grappling.  In the second round, however, Cummings came back with not one, not two– but 3 armbar attempts, all of which Frey narrowly escaped.  Frey rallied in the third round, dominating Cummings again, assuring Frey the win by unanimous decision.
Frey’s upcoming title match will be her second atomweight title attempt.  Her last fight was also her last title shot, held on December 17, 2017 against Ham Seo Hee for the Road FC Atomwight Chamionship. It was a short fight, but an explosive one.  Both fighters came out with guns blazing.  With the powerful high level of striking from both fighters, the fight could have gone either way.  However, Frey ended up on the wrong side of the gun when, with under 1 minute left in the first round, Seo Hee fired a brutal left hand shot that hit its target precisely.  Frey fell to the ground where Seo Hee continued her assault until the ref stopped the fight with just 22 seconds left in the round.

Independence day is gone, but the fireworks are not over. Tonight, the cannons will go off again as these two fighters step into the ring to face each other for the coveted Invicta FC atomweight belt.  Minna Grussander will be putting her skills to the test, ready to prove she is championship caliber while Frey will be looking to put her previous title loss behind her and show the world that she is a force to be reckoned with.  The night sky will be bright with explosions as these two fighters light each other up.

Who will you be rooting for?
