Tonight, in Denver, Colorado, Maycee “The Future” Barber will make her official UFC debut versus fellow debutant Hannah “Shockwave” Cifers.
The 20-year-old earned a contract after picking up a TKO victory on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series a few months back. She was originally scheduled to meet Maia Stevenson, however, when injury forced Stevenson out of the bout the door opened for Cifers.
Talking to MMA Junkie on media day, Barber said she’s not yet feeling too many nerves ahead of the biggest fight of her career— “this is what I’m here to do. It’s kind of backwards to ask for something and than feel nervous or scared about it. You’re saying you wanna do something, you wanna do it. You just got to push through the nerves or whatever thoughts you have.”
I’m addition to a variety of other topics from opponent changes to how she got her start in MMA, Barber revealed the opponent she wishes to face next— Mackenzie Dern.
“The person I want to fight is Mackenzie Dern, actually. She has the number fifteen spot and I want that spot. I feel like that’s a fight that we’re gonna win and it’s gonna get me in the rankings and than the next thing is to move on up through the rankings.”
Unbeaten Dern and Barber both competed in LFA prior to signing with the UFC. Barber claims that Dern avoided her several times during her tenure with LFA.
“She sucked me in LFA! When we’re fighting in LFA I was offered to fight her and she turned it down and I wanted to fight her. I was given the opportunity a second time and she turned it down again. I feel like now she can’t run away. I mean she’s in the UFC, she has to fight, so that’s the fight for us. She’s not ready for me.”
