The number one female BJJ black belt in the world, Mackenzie Dern is set to headline Fight To Win Pro 25 when she takes on Pati Fontes on February 4th.
Dern, enjoyed one of the most successful years of her career to date in 2016 by winning the Europeans, Pans, World Pro, and Worlds. She is currently the Fight To Win world BJJ champion and will defend her title in front of her hometown crowd in Scottsdale, Arizona. She was recently announced as 2016’s female black belt of the year.
The 23-year-old is a star to watch out for in 2017, both in BJJ competition and MMA competition. She is without a doubt the best female BJJ competitor in the entire world, and won a world championship at every belt before finally achieving black belt. She has defeated the number 1 female heavyweight MMA fighter in the world Gabi Garcia in BJJ competition. Garcia walks at over 245 pounds, which is a testament to what 115 pounder Mackenzie Dern is capable of. More recently Dern has started to compete in MMA competition and is now 2-0-0 as a pro, after defeating Kenia Rosas back in July 2016 and Montana Stewart in October 2016. Recently retired MMA fighter, Miesha Tate has expressed interest in facing Mackenzie Dern in a submission only grappling bout.
Dern’s opponent for February’s grappling bout is Patricia Fontes. She is a Brazilian black belt from the Checkmat team who is currently living in California. This marks the first major superfight in a pro jiu-jitsu event for Fontes, an IBJJF No-Gi World champion in 2015 and 2016
