A look at the top-three women’s lightweight fighters in the world

On September 1, history will be made when Dynasty Combat Sports introduces a world title belt for the women’s lightweight division. Sarah Patterson and Jozette Cotton will battle for the inaugural title at ‘DCS 37: September Fight Fest’. The event will be aired live on FloGrappling.

The 155-pound women’s lightweight division is a fast growing one in MMA, many women cannot comfortably make 145-pounds which makes 155 the perfect weight-class for them. Patterson and Cotton, along with Bobbi-Jo Dalziel are considered “the big three” of the division. WMMA Rankings takes a look at the top-three ranked fighters in a division which looks set to break into the mainstream MMA world over the next year.

Number-one lightweight Sarah Patterson is looking to defend her position and win the inaugural world title.

#1 Sarah Patterson
Also known as “Primal”, Patterson,  is a 32-year-old fighting out of Iowa, United States. She is widely regarded as the best 155-pound fighter in the world, currently ranked at number-one in the lightweight world rankings. She is riding high on a four-fight win streak, the longest of any woman in the division. She has a 100% finish rate, finishing four of her career victories in the first round, whilst the other ended in the second. In March, she made a statement to the MMA world by submitting the returning Tamikka Brents in the very first round.

Patterson has been fighting as a professional since 2002, however she has found that opportunities are very limited in weight classes above 145-pounds. 155-pounds is Patterson’s natural division, and she believes with a set organization finally getting behind the division, she will be the woman to bring mainstream attention to it, much like Cris Cyborg with the featherweights and Ronda Rousey with the bantamweights.

The 31-year-old fights out of Ontario, Canada. She is undefeated and widely regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound prospects in women’s MMA. She possesses insane power in her lower body, picking up knockout victories by way of head kicks and knees over Andria Wawro and Tamikka Brents. In a recent interview with WMMA Rankings, Dalziel confirmed that she will be challenging the winner of #PattersonVSCotton for the belt.

#3 Jozette Cotton
Cotton (6-1) will make her first appearance since her upset loss to Dalziel last October. The 29-year-old, also known as “The #1 Headbusta”, feels as though she is still the best lightweight fighter in the world and wants to prove it by taking out Patterson for the belt and then avenging her loss to Dalziel. Cotton has been competing as a professional since 2012, picking up notable victories over Killastina Makihele and Jessica Halverson.
