This Friday at Fight Nights Global 85 a matchup in the promotion’s women’s flyweight grand prix will take place.
The semi-final bout will see Julia Borisova square off with Liliya Shakirova. The event is headlined by a middleweight title bout as Abusupyan Alikhanov will defend his 185-pound crown against Roman Kopylov.
Unbeaten at 4-0-0 Liliya Shakirova is the top flyweight fighting out of Uzbekistan. That may not mean much to the average fan but when you consider that three of those victories came over top Chinese flyweights Jie Miao, Bellator fighter and current WLF flyweight champion Na Liang, and Bo Meng her abilities are not that of a typical fighter with only four professional bouts to her name. While a win over Borisova may not put her on the radar of many fans it would get her one step closer to capturing the grand prix title.
Borisova opened her career with a three-fight unbeaten streak that included a split decision triumph over China’s Jin Tang. She would soon fall on hard times, dropping her next four contests, most notably to Bo Meng and newly crowned One FC flyweight queen, Jingnan Xiong. Borisova returned to action in December picking up a decision victory over Mariya Artyukhina under the FNR banner. She is looking for another win to further distance her from past setbacks and earn a shot at flyweight gold
Fight Nights Global 85 takes place from the VTB Ice Palace in Moscow, Russia. The winner of the Fight Nights Global Grand Prix will be crowned the inaugural 125-pound champion of the promotion.
What do you think WMMA fans? Does Shakirova keep her unbeaten streak alive, or will Borisova pull off the upset?
