Jozette Cotton made history last Friday by becoming the first ever women’s lightweight champion in MMA history. She won the belt by defeating Sarah Patterson at the Dynasty Combat Sports 37 event, which aired live on FloCombat.
The 29-year-old, also known as “The #1 Headbusta”, is a woman who is not afraid to say what is on her mind. In the past she has hit out at the likes of Cris Cyborg, Charmaine Tweet, Brittney Elkin and Sarah Patterson. However, one woman which the champion says she will always respect is former UFC bantamweight champion, Ronda Rousey.
“Ronda will always be the sh*t for me. She helped us women get here to where we are today and for that she will always have my respect“ Cotton told WMMA Rankings.
“I had Ronda winning on her return [last December] because I figured she had enough time to reevaluate her skills and become a better fighter. I think Ronda is a very strong person and a great fighter, just a different type of fighter. She shines at grappling and should compete in those competitions.”
“I think the fans making fun of the losses comes with the sport. People have their favorite fighters and like to put their opponents down after a loss. When they lose it makes them feel good because their fighter won. After my loss to Bobbi-Jo Dalziel, my joke with my friends every time they talked smack to me was ‘Don’t make me Bobbi Jo your a**”, and we would all laugh knowing I lost to her’ ”
“Ronda needs to do her and not take any of it in because half of the people criticising have never been in a combat sport, period. So she shouldn’t let them get to her, they don’t write her check. Her attitude is her own personality and that’s what make us individuals! I always say Be You”
