Ketlen Vieira: “Cat Zingano exposes herself too much, I will counter and catch her when she’s not expecting”

Ketlen Vieira competes in the biggest fight of her career this Saturday when she battles Cat Zingano on the UFC 222 main card.

Vieira plans to call for a title shot if she is victorious on Saturday.

Undefeated Vieira (9-0) is 3-0 with the UFC, having picked up decision wins over Kelly Faszholz and Ashlee Evans-Smith, as well as a second-round submission over Sara McMann. The 26-year-old is very confident ahead of her fight against Zingano and feels fully prepared.

My preparation is very intense, especially in the physical aspect and jiu-jitsu. My team is working hard in order to help me put on a great fight. They tell me I’m getting ready for a war, not a fight.” Vieira told MMAFighting. “Cat Zingano is a bit unpredictable. She moves forward all the time, always going after the win and that’s what we’re focused and working on, trying to counter and catch her when she’s not expecting. Sometimes she exposes herself too much, so we’re focusing on the physical aspect. I think that age is not a huge factor, but it is a factor that will help me recover quickly in between rounds.

It’s a similar fight [to my last one]. We knew that Sara McMann was strong, especially in the first round, and then she starts to fade. My coach ‘Dede’ told me before the fight that we would probably lose the first round, but we would come back in the second and third because she would slow down. That will probably happen again. She will come explosive in the first round, aggressive. The fact that she hasn’t fought in almost two years, I can use that to my advantage and get another win.” she continued.

The Brazilian plans to take to the microphone and call for a title shot if she is victorious on Saturday.

For sure, I think that excites me, but I’m trying to stay focused on Cat Zingano. It’s a dream. I always wanted to get in the UFC, but not only to fight and keep my job, but to fight to become champion. I believe I’ll possibly become a contender, especially now that Amanda [Nunes] might move up in weight. I think it’s a big possibility, but my team and I are trying to stay focused on this fight first. After we win, in the Octagon, I will ask for a title shot.” Vieira said.

  1. what happens is Cat fights once a year, and so every fight is a comeback fight, resulting in an impatient, charging style. She has made for herself the character of “fierce, troubled, determined single mom fighting for her and her child” and this makes her predictable. If cat fought more often she wouldnt have that angry impatience every fight.

  2. Cat started slow in her fights against Tate and Nunes and came from behind and won. She tried to start fast against Ronda and that was a terrible mistake. She’s been off now for almost two years so who knows what to expect at this point, but I think long lay-offs hurt more often than they help.
