Katlyn Chookagian vs. Antonina Shevchenko targeted for UFC May 30 event

An exciting flyweight matchup is in the works for UFC’s upcoming Fight Night event on May 30.

Former title challenger Katlyn Chookagian (13-3) is slated to face Antonina Shevchenko (8-1) at the next UFC event on May 30.

The UFC Apex in Vegas is the rumored targeted location and venue for the event.

Chookagian attempted to dethrone flyweight champ Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 247 in February but was defeated via third-round TKO. “Blonde Fighter” is 4-2 since moving to the UFC flyweight division in 2018.

The elder Shevchenko sister, Antonina, bounced back from the first loss of her MMA career with a submission win over Lucie Pudilova in a “Fight of the Night.” She signed with the UFC in 2018 after earning a contract on the Contender Series.

  1. This one has me scratching my head. It’s a big step up for Antonina, while Katlyn should be fighting someone in the Top 5. If Katlyn wins, she beat a #12 ranked fighter, so that doesn’t do much for her. If Antonina wins, then she is in line to fight her sister? We know that’s not going to happen.

    1. Yeah; that’s a big fight for Antonina, especially w/little over 2 weeks notice. Admittedly, given that she is typically training throughout the year, it may affect her less than Katlyn. Just glad we have another woman’s match-up for this month.

    2. noo, if Antonina won, she would get another opponent in the top 5. Her loss to Roxanne is still too recent to be near a title shot. I guess it’s a good story line, fighting both sisters. That’s the only thing I can think of. Unless they are that low on how they feel about Katlyn because she is maybe not as exciting as they would like. Also, there are probably many fighters not available due to fears about training and fighting during coronavirus.

  2. An unexpected match-up, but it’s got my interest; I of course want A-Shev to get it done. Hopefully she’s not over-trained after all the prepping for Calvillo, but then again I dunno if I recall K-Chook taking a fight this late, or if either of those things even matter…
