Tonight on the UFC 214 early prelims, a strawweight contest will go down when Hawaii’s Kailin Curran battles undefeated Alexandra Albu.
The fight will no doubt be a pivotal one for Curran (4-4) who is 1-4 since joining the UFC. Her sole UFC victory comes over Emily Kagan, a woman who has since been cut from the roster. Her losses come against Paige VanZant, Alex Chambers, Felice Herrig and Jamie Moyle.
Prior to joining the UFC, Curran was undefeated with a 3-0 record, picking up unanimous decision victories over Kaiyana Rain, Emi Tomimatsu and Yoo Jin Jung, all under the Pacific Xtreme Combat banner. As an amateur, she went an impressive 4-1, with her sole loss coming to fellow UFC strawweight JJ Aldrich by way of a first round rear-naked choke.
Albu (6-0) has not competed inside the UFC octagon for over two years. The 27-year-old recently revealed she was suffering from several injuries and had decided to finish her education. She made her UFC debut back in 2015, submitting Izabela Badurek in the second round by way of a Guillotine Choke.
Many MMA media sites including Tapology and Sherdog list Albu’s record as 2-0. This has led many to critisize the UFC for signing Albu when she was apparently only 1-0 as a professional. However, Albu reveals she was actually 5-0 when she first signed to the UFC, improving to 6-0 when she defeated Izabela Badurek in 2015. The UFC also acknowledges her 6-0 record, as shown during her last fight and on their official website. She has a 100% finish rate: Four wins by KO, two by submission (armbar, guillotine).
UFC 214 takes place from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, United States. The early prelims will be aired live on UFC Fight Pass from 6:30pm ET / 3:30pm PT.
