Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs. Valentina Shevchenko flyweight title fight back on for December 8’s UFC 231

A women’s flyweight fight between Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Valentina Shevchenko has been re-booked for the upcoming UFC 231 event on December 8.

Will Shevchenko become the new UFC flyweight champion?

The fight was originally announced last month but was pulled when the UFC needed a headliner for the UFC 230 event on November 3, the organization opted to book Shevchenko vs. Sijara Eubanks for the vacant belt as Jedrzejczyk wasn’t prepared to reduce the length of her training camp as she feel she needs enough time to prepare for Shevchenko. However, earlier today the organization announced Daniel Cormier vs. Derrick Lewis for the heavyweight title will serve as the new headliner, in the process scrapping Shevchenko vs. Eubanks from the card.

  1. what a roller coaster. I wonder if they’ll even believe they’re in front of each other in the cage at this rate. the UFC scrambling is giving the fans whiplash.

    1. Yeah, as I stated elsewhere, I can imagine Valentina’s head must be spinning with all the changes made to her title challenge. 2 delays and a cancellation from Nicco, then it’s JJ, no it’s Sarje, no it’s JJ. Although it’s a slap in the face to the deserving Flyweights, so was Sarje, and at least this is a far more fan friendly fight, and more importantly I would think from the UFC’s perspective, a much bigger attraction.

For me, even if JJ may not have earned this spot (who, besides Holly, can lose 2 straight at one division and then move up to challenge for the title after one victory over a non top 5 fighter?), I’m excited to see 2 of the best strikers in WMMA face off. Unfortunately for JJ, Valentina also has a good ground game. I would think the odds are strongly in Valentina’s favor.

I guess Cormier/Lewis is now the main event. Sad that there is not even one WMMA fight on the entire card.

  2. I just hope everyone gives Valentina the respect she deserves for the classy way she’s handled all the bs that’s come her way. She just stays steady and ready. She’ll make a great champ.

  3. This is the one we all want to see, but by this time we know to follow the Bullet’s example and not count on anything until the cage door shuts.
