Jessica Andrade to defend strawweight title against Weili Zhang in China on August 31

Jessica Andrade will make the first defense of her UFC strawweight title in the headlining bout of the UFC on ESPN +15 event on August 31.

Andrade (20-6-0) captured the straweight belt in the main event of UFC 237 this past May after defeating Rose Namajunas via second-round knockout. The 27-year-old is on a four-fight win streak which includes victories over Karolina Kowalkiewicz, Tecia Torres and Claudia Gadelha.

Zhang (19-1-0) hasn’t suffered an MMA loss since her professional MMA debut back in 2013. Since making her UFC debut in 2018, the 29-year-old has picked up impressive wins over Tecia Torres, Jessica Aguiler and Danielle Taylor.

UFC on ESPN +15 takes place on August 31 2019 from the Shenzhen Universiade Sports Centre in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China.

  1. Good move by the UFC; China has barely been tapped as a huge market and source of fighters. They should do this at or near the legendary Shaolin Temple. I don’t know how that lines up with the reported venue; guess I should consult a map app.

    1. Wowww ! Suarez and Karate Hottie can’t be too happy ! Rose is probably like “PHEW” !

They let Zhang skip the entire Top 5 ! I thought they’d at least have her try to beat Hottie, Joanna, or Suarez first !

      JR Yuen, whucha think ?

      1. BTW, given all the prior talk about Weili vs. JJ, do you think they asked JJ first to face Weili and when she declined, then asked Jessica?

        1. JJ vs Weili would have been a great headliner to determine a number one contender! On Instagram, Zhang says that JJ turned down the matchup.

      2. Karate Hottie also reacted to the news on Instagram– she posted a quote that said “what is for you, will not pass you” along with a brief statement about working hard to improve everyday and staying ready.
