Jessica Andrade: “I’m expecting to get a title shot, but with the UFC, you can never be certain”

Jessica Andrade is hoping that her next fight will be against the winner of the upcoming April 7 UFC strawweight title fight between Rose Namajunas and Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

Andrade wants her next fight to be for the UFC strawweight title.

Andrade (18-6) dominated Tecia Torres for the unanimous decision win at this past Saturday’s UFC on FOX 28 event. She is now on a two-fight win streak, following an equally devastating performance over Claudia Gadelha last September.

It’s a meaningful win because of her ranking and everything,” Andrade told MMAJunkie after her win over Torres. “But we have to wait and see what happens in the title fight. I’m expecting to get a title shot, but with the UFC, you can never be certain. I know we delivered a good show for the crowd and I’m happy with the show we put on.”

The 26-year-old Brazilian used a wrestling heavy attack to outpoint Torres for the decision win, the “Bate Estaca” says this was the plan heading into the fight.

We knew the takedowns were going to be a very important part of it, and in the end they actually defined the fight,” Andrade said. “The takedowns, the pressure on top – that got me the win. In the first round, I was a little bit lost with my movement. I couldn’t really find my reach as much as I was expecting to. But as soon as I got the clinch and got the takedowns, I thought, ‘OK, I guess that’s where we’re going to have to do it.’

Although the striking got a little better, and I was able to connect a little bit better later on, for sure the takedowns were going to be the key to get the win, so that’s what I went for.”

  1. If Rose wins again, Jessica should get the next shot for sure. But if Joanna wins and regains the belt, especially if it’s close, there might be a lot of demand for a rubber match.
