Irene Aldana competes in one of the biggest fights of her career to date at this Saturday’s UFC 245 event when she takes on undefeated Ketlen Vieira.
Aldana (11-5-0) knows a win over Vieira, who is ranked number-two in the UFC’s rankings, could earn her a title shot in 2020. The Mexican is ready for the challenge.
“She is No. 2 so it is a great challenge for me. This fight clarifies a lot in the division. The winner could fight the winner of Amanda-Germaine,” Aldana said during a recent chat with BJPenn.com. “So it opens a door to the belt sooner than I thought it would be. Winning this fight makes me climb to the top of the division. I have nothing to lose because I am ranked number 10. I took this fight as a replacement as she was supposed to fight Julianna Pena, but something happened to it. It is going to define a lot of things. The fact that the title fight is the same night, is good.
“I haven’t been told that by the UFC, but I think it is obvious. This is a number one contender fight,” she continued.
The 31-year-old is fully focused on Vieira, but says she’s ready to step in if one of Amanda Nunes or Germaine de Randamie can’t compete on Saturday.
“I think the number one option is Ketlen because she is ranked number two. Their first pick is Ketlen, but I will be there and if they need me, I’ll be ready, and weighing 135.” she said.
UFC 245 takes place this Saturday December 14, 2019, from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. The main card featuring Nunes vs. De Randamie will be aired live on pay-per-view from 10pm EST.
