Invicta FC strawweight Emily “GORDINHA” Ducote communicated with the promotion’s president Shannon Knapp in the last few months for a possible show in May or a possible show in June, due to the uncertainty of how the COVID-19 pandemic would affect future events.
“We were trying to be on track and ready to be able to cut [weight] had there been a fight in May or June,” Ducote said. “Everything got confirmed with a four-week notice. I was only able to train with my head coach, Giulliano Gallupi. We did what we could do until the gym reopened, and I started my regular training with my other coaches.”
American Top Team OKC opened since Ducote’s fight got confirmed. All the public classes have been up and running.
The return of Invicta FC started with an unprecedented fight week ahead of Invicta FC 40. The weekly activities were moved a day earlier than usual, as fighters flew in on Sunday and the fight night will take place on Thursday night.
Emily Ducote said it wasn’t a surprise of the makeshift schedule, but it’s a “little bit weird” that the fight is so early.
“The world has been thrown off the last few months, but Sunday is a bit early. If it were a regular schedule, we would’ve flown on a Tuesday,” Ducote said. “But I understand they are trying to be cautious and keep everyone safe.”
As fight week was shortened by an extra day, Invicta FC made the restriction of only allowing fighters to have one coach in their corner.
“I understand it because everyone needs to be tested and they are trying to keep the event as small as possible,” Ducote said. “But that is to me probably the weirdest part, because I like to have my full coaching staff. However, I’m not worried about it. Now, I won’t take for granted the full coaching staff next time.”
Ducote added that she doesn’t want to overlook Lima. She’s focused on this matchup instead of thinking about another title shot.
“The belt is not my ultimate goal, it never has been. I’ve been very fortunate to have been put in that position and the opportunity to fight for it,” Ducote said. “More of my style is taking one step at a time. I’m not worried about the title or anything else.”
“Gordinha” Ducote takes on the former UFC strawweight Lima on Thursday night, the fight card begins at 8 p.m. ET on UFC Fight Pass.
