ICYMI: Heather Hardy dishes on #Bellator194 weigh-in drama

Tonight, at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., bitter rivals Heather Hardy and Ana Julaton will go to war in a highly anticipated flyweight grudge match.

Yesterday, at the official Bellator 194 weigh-ins, the athletic commissioner shouted “126 pounds” after “The Heat” stepped onto the scale. Heather left the scale, expressed a sigh of relief, and began rehydrating. She retreated to the back to take part in some media interviews.

A few hours later, Hardy received a call stating that she would be fined 20% of her purse for missing weight.

Mike Mazzulli, president of the Mohegan Tribe Department of Athletic Regulation said it was under his supervision in which Hardy missed weight. He explained to MMA Junkie, “It was never said she was good..She got on the scale, she was 126.25…She was a quarter-pound over. At that point, I explained to her– after evaluating her and seeing how she was– that she was not going to lose anymore. The fight’s not going to happen (if she continues to cut)– I’d cancel the fight. Fighter safety is the most important at the Mohegan, and I make sure of it.”

He continued, “I evaluated her, and I felt I didn’t even want her to (remove her clothes and use the towel) because at that point she wasn’t even speaking to me (on the scale). I made the decision as the commissioner that I wasn’t going to put her on the scale with no clothes on– that’s how concerned I was about her. And my doctors will re-evaluate her tonight at the (ceremonial) weigh-in.”

On the other side of the odd situation, Hardy and her team say she did make the weight. “I was shocked when they called in and said they were fining me. Yes, it was a rough-ass weight cut– it was totally clear on my face. But (Mazulli) looked at me and said 126. There was a guy behnd him that said, ‘We make the allowance for your bikini. She isn’t stripping, we don;t need the towel.”

She continued,  “I was two-tenths over and they gave me the allowance for bikini top and bottom without making me strip in front of the room. I’m not sure about there having been a problem at all– I was backstage after the weigh-in hydrating and doing interviews for like an hour after.”

Mazulli’s decision caused an uproar with fight fans. When a fighter misses weight that closely, there are some options– Hardy could have had the opportunity to weigh-in with a towel and she could have had an additional two hour window to make the weight. After all, she was only one-fourth of a pound over the flyweight limit.

Contrary to many beliefs, Hardy doesn’t blame the commissioner. She, in fact, says it was Ana Julaton and her team who “demanded” she was fined. Check out her post below!

Heat 👸🏼 Hurricane 👸🏻 part 1. . Weigh in DRAMA times TEN!!! This morning I weighed in at 126.2. The commissioner asked me if I would be willing to strip to make the weight with no bikini on, and I said YES. He turned to the man behind him, and asked him to get someone to come hang a towel. The man behind him said “Why, there’s two ounces right there. One ounce top, one ounce bottom… it’s 126. . So the commissioner shouted “126” and told me to go hydrate. Which I did. I stayed in the back an hour later doing interviews and nothing was mentioned. . A few hours later, I got a call saying I would be fined for the two ounces because my opponents camp was demanding the money. I DO NOT blame the commissioner…he made a judgement call. He wanted to see me rehydrate and didn’t see the need to wait for a towel to come from across the hotel for two@ounces that clearly were made up in clothes. If my opponent wants to take my money, take food off my daughters plate for something so petty as TWO ounces… OK champ. All yours. 1. Seems to me that Heather got screwed. She was not given the opportunities to make weight that other fighters have been given. The whole weigh-in racket needs to be reformed so that fighters fight at their natural weight. This whole cutting, re-hydrating thing is unnatural, dangerous, and designed to undermine the purpose of having weight classes to begin with.
