Huge news for Women’s MMA. At Gateway Fighting Series on January 28th 2017 Jozette Cotton and Sarah Patterson are set to make history when they fight for the lightweight championship belt. The bout was originally set to be a non-title three round fight, but will instead be a five round championship contest. Currently no major promotion has a belt for the 155lb women, that is about to change.
Jozette “The #1 Headbusta” Cotton is currently the Number 2 ranked Lightweight in the world, her record is currently 6-1 with her only loss coming to Number 1 Lightweight Bobbi-Jo Dalziel who has announced plans to move down a weight class. Sarah ‘Primal’ Patterson (4-2-0) will be making her Lightweight debut and is currently the Number 2 Welterweight+ in the world, she has not lost a fight since 2009 and has ended her last three bouts with brutal finishes. Patterson recently told us that she plans to “finish” Cotton and that she has a lot more to learn about life and respect.
Speaking on the change to a title bout Gateway Fighting Series matchmaker Mike Camp tells us “The realization of the history that could be made along with both fighters’ lofty rankings made it imperative that we change it to a title bout”. For fans hoping to watch this historic bout in person Camp reveals “January 28th Gateway Fighting Series in Sioux City, IA will be on sale Friday December 16th via MTA Shrine box office, your favourite local fighter, cagetix.com or by calling 3094282823″. If you can’t make it down to the event, never fear Camp tells us “It will be filmed to air on ABC TV at a later date in the Midwest market.”
Camp tells us more about the promotion “GFS was founded in December 2015 by Jared Daniels-Block of St.Louis, MO. In October he decided to hire myself and my son Stephen Camp to help expand his brand. I have been a matchmaker for 14 years, I have fought and managed as well.” The upcoming event in January is for a very special cause “I have a scar lesion on my right frontal lobe from multiple concussions. PTSD probably CTE per MD. I want to raise awareness on this issue as well as other charities. The Sioux City event is designed to create a fund to help restore the historic MTA Shrine Centre there. We intend to take this shrine program national. GFS is very excited to be in a position to give back and every event will have a charity that we are trying to help.”
Cotton VS Patterson won’t be the only women’s bout on the card. Solveigh Skarhus will take on Chloe Bonar in an amateur bout for the 145 amateur championship belt. Skarhus earned her nickname of “The Evil One” directly from Ronda Rousey’s mother and is a 2 time Muay Thai national champion as well as undefeated in MMA. Bonar trains with 17 time UFC veteran Spencer Fisher. Another amateur bout at the 145 weight will see Mercedes Timmerman take on an opponent still to be announced.
The women’s lightweight division at 155lbs is fast becoming one of the most exciting divisions in MMA with several exciting stars including Bobbi-Jo Dalziel, Brittney Elkin, Gabrielle Holloway, Andria Wawro, Charlene Donahue and many more as well as of course Cotton and Patterson. On the possibility of seeing these stars fight for the promotion, Camp says “All are on my wishlist”. The girls at 155lbs have previously not been given as many opportunities as girls fighting at lower weight classes, however it looks like that’s about to change. There are currently hundreds of 155lb amateur women waiting for opportunities, as well as girls who are pro wanting more fights.
One woman who’ll most certainly be keeping an eye on the bout is Number 3 Lightweight Brittney Elkin. Elkin recently slammed Jozette Cotton telling us “I hate her“, branding her “trash” and saying “I would love to punch the shit out of her annoying face and [her] personality is a waste“. Whether Cotton wins or loses, you can bet Elkin has her eye on a bout with Cotton further down the line.
The 155lbs world championship fight between Cotton and Patterson is big news for Women’s MMA and a huge step in the right direction. January 28th 2017 for Gateway Fighting Series, #CottonVSPatterson – history is going to be made!
